The Auxiliary is a group of Arboretum enthusiasts who volunteer time and talent to support the work of the Arboretum. Volunteer and educational opportunities exist on many levels for our members. The Auxiliary presents fundraising events which include: Spring Plant Sale, Summer Garden Tours, Fall Harvest Sale, Quilt Raffle, and Holiday Sale.
Auxiliary memberships are available to existing Arboretum volunteers only. Visit arbvol.umn.edu for step-by-step instructions on becoming an Arboretum volunteer.
Private Garden Tours 2021
The Auxiliary Private Garden Tours feature beautiful gardens, each with its own history and distinct beauty. Guests travel in air-conditioned motor coaches and tours are followed by a brunch, luncheon or hors d'oeuvres, depending on the day and time of the tour. To ensure our guests have a memorable experience, volunteers help as bus escorts and garden hosts. All proceeds go to support the work of the Arboretum.

Plant List and Map
You’ll need to make free reservations to shop this year’s sale. You must make reservations in advance of arriving at the plant sale. Shop early in the sale for the best selection. We do not hold back items or restock. Please arrive within 15 minutes of your scheduled reservation time.
Please note: Reservations to shop the plant sale will only give you access to the plant sale. If you’d like to visit the rest of the Arboretum, you’ll need to make separate reservations.
Navigating the Sale
Keep track of your purchases as you go through the sale. You can pick up a tally sheet at the entry, or if you like to plan ahead, search plants on our website, then print out your list and bring it along. You can also write your list ahead of time on our downloadable form. If you bring a list with you, you can cross out anything you don’t buy or change the quantity to your actual purchase as you go through the sale.

Watch for our red & white directional signs to the plant sale at County Rd 41. You won’t be able to access the sale through the Arboretum’s main gatehouse or Eastern Drive.

Mother's Day weekend has always been a special and busy time at the Arb. To meet the needs of visitors coming to see the incredible spring gardens and shop the Auxiliary Plant Sale, the plant sale will take place at Farm at the Arb. Parking and space is plentiful and best of all, there is no admission charge for the sale! Please use the 82nd Street entrance.
With more than 1,000 varieties, there will be a stellar selection of sun and shade plants, curated grasses, heirloom vegetables, plentiful herbs, native Minnesota plant species and University of Minnesota introductions.
- Please maintain a six-foot distance between other shoppers.
- Masks are required in the shopping area.
- Credit cards for contactless payment are preferred.
- Arboretum staff will be directing traffic and helping cars locate parking.
- Portable toilets will be available on-site.
- Our wagons are always in short supply. Please bring carrying containers for your purchases: boxes, wagons, carts. Always stay with your wagons or carts.
- Please shop the sale as efficiently as possible. We aren’t timing visits or asking shoppers to leave, but we’re suggesting shoppers spend less than 45 minutes at the sale.
- There will be a pickup area where you can drive up to load your plants.
- Volunteers will make a list of your purchases, which you will hand to a cashier for payment.
- Please keep your receipt as you may need to show it to security personnel as you exit.
All proceeds go to support the work of the Arboretum
Each year, the Auxiliary creates a show-stopping, handmade quilt for the popular Quilt Raffle Fundraiser. The 2021 quilt, "Sights and Sounds of the Arboretum", will be on display in the Red Barn on May 8 and 9 during the Auxiliary Plant Sale. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the sale.
Starting May 10, ticket sales will continue in the Oswald Visitor Center. The raffle drawing will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the Snyder Auditorium on the Saturday of the Fall Harvest Sale in September. For more details, call 612-625-9865.
Fall Harvest Sale
Join members in creating seasonal floral arrangements, greeting cards, botanical products, knitted wearable accessories, gifts for the home and both functional and whimsical wood-crafted items. Volunteers help set-up, assist shoppers with their purchases and assist with take down at the end of sale. All proceeds go to support the work of the Arboretum.

Be creative in using natural and faux materials to create wreaths and arrangements, craft
items, knit and felted wearable art, ornaments, gift cards, scented potpourri and soaps, wood-crafted game boards. All for the home and gift giving. Volunteers help set up, assist shoppers with their purchases and assist with take down at the end of sale. All proceeds go to support the work of the Arboretum.
